1983 – Black July
Through the eyes of a witness...
That night, I was asleep.
A sound from outside disturbed my sleep.
I opened the room door and rushed downstairs.
At the lodge entrance, the manager had locked the iron gate and was peering out through the keyhole. I tapped his shoulder and asked:
“What’s the noise? Is there a problem?”
He replied calmly:
“There’s trouble in Borella. People are going around, setting fire to Tamil shops.”
My heart skipped a beat.
“Navam, Lakshman… the ones who were staying here?”
“I sent them away early this morning. They must be hiding somewhere now.”
A slight relief.
“Only Sinhalese are in the lodge now. No trouble will come. Go back to your room and lock the door,”he said.
I returned, locked the door, pushed the table and suitcase against it as barricade. But I couldn't calm my nerves.
The smell of burning rubber, the smoke, the Tamil screams from outside… they chilled my blood.
I looked out the window.
Black smoke covered the street.
I could see torn body parts — Tamils.
Shops destroyed — Tamil shops.
Vehicles were being stopped.
If Sinhalese were inside — they passed.
If Tamils — they died.
Then an army truck arrived.
I took a breath — thinking maybe the violence would stop.
But…
A soldier stepped down and spoke a few words to the mob.
Then, petrol bombs were handed out — from the military vehicle.
The ones sent to protect… came to supply the fire.
The next scene…
A white car was stopped.
Inside — a Tamil family.
Father, mother, a baby in arms, a ten-year-old girl, some bags.
A family fleeing danger.
Suddenly, someone smashed the driver’s window.
Once they confirmed the passengers were Tamil, four or five men surrounded the car.
Bottles opened. Petrol poured.
One man pulled open the back door.
Dragged the terrified little girl out.
They set the car on fire.
The man held the girl between his legs.
His hands started touching her chest...
Inside the car, the family burned.
Suddenly, the father — engulfed in flames — forced the car door open and jumped out.
Burning and desperate, he ran back —
grabbed his daughter from that man’s grasp —
and re-entered the burning car with her.
He chose to die with her — with his family — rather than let her be brutalized.
I couldn't watch anymore.
I closed my eyes and wept.
